At the age of 14, Oakley S. Walker, the inventor of the electromagnetic chuck and founder of the O.S. Walker Company, had earned $100, enough to buy his liberty from his uncle and strike out on his own. Walker served as a machinist’s apprentice, a railroad brake tester, and finally an inventor and tool designer. In 1896 he launched his own manufacturing business, a one-man shop in a rented factory.
